Who Actually Owns Your Website? (And Why It Matters)

Here's a simple test: could you hand your website to a different designer tomorrow, without asking your current one for permission? If the honest answer is no, you don't fully own your website — even if you paid for every bit of it.

How this usually happens

It rarely happens on purpose. A designer registers your domain "to make things easier," builds your site on their own hosting account, and keeps the admin login. Everything works fine — until you want to switch designers, and suddenly your domain, your site, and your email all live inside someone else's account.

At that point, "ownership" becomes a negotiation instead of a fact.

Three things to check right now

• Domain registration: Look up your domain's WHOIS or registrar record. Is your business the registrant, or is it your web designer or agency?
• Hosting account: Do you have your own login to wherever the site actually lives, or does someone else control access?
• Site files: If you asked today, could you get a full copy of your website's files and content within 24 hours?

If any of those made you pause, it's worth sorting out — even if you're happy with your current designer today. Relationships and businesses change; your ownership shouldn't depend on the relationship staying good forever.
